Global E3 - for engineers
HAW Hamburg is a member of the Global E3 international university network. The network promotes study exchanges around the world for engineering students. As part of the programme, HAW Hamburg students complete a tuition-free study semester at one of the participating universities.
The majority of the universities in the network are located in the USA. Other partners are in Australia and various other countries in Asia, Latin America and Europe. Overview of the participating universities
IMPORTANT: Even though there are Global E³ university partners in Europe, an exchange semester is not possible. Please apply to the HAW Hamburg ERASMUS partner universities instead. We ask for your understanding.
FAQs - Frequently asked questions
Kann ich als Masterstudierende*r in die USA gehen?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
This programme is open to students in the Faculty of Engineering & Computer Science. If not all places are taken, then places will be offered to engineering students in the Faculty of Life Sciences.
The application requirements:
Bachelor's students must be at least in their fourth semester at the time of the exchange.
Master's students must be at least in their second semester at the time of the exchange.
- Average grade of 2.7 or better
- Very good skills in the language spoken in the country and/or the language of instruction
If possible, you should be studying within the standard period of study (Regelstudienzeit). If you are missing one or two exams, this is not necessarily a problem. Please explain the reasons for this in your application.
We also like to see applicants, who are serving others in some way in the university; e.g. webuddy programme, OE tutor.
Please use the DAAD language certificate as proof of language proficiency for the internal application. The certificate must be recent. You should have at least the rating **** in each area. Even if you are studying in English at HAW Hamburg, this language certificate is necessary to ensure the comparability of applications in the selection process.
If you are a native speaker, you do not need to submit a language certificate (please submit an informal letter).
As a rule, a language certificate (TOEFL, IELTS) must be submitted for later registration at a Global E3 university - even if you are studying in English at HAW Hamburg. You can find the exact requirements you need to fulfil under the profile of the respective university in the Global E3 database.
You must first apply internally to your faculty for a place on the Global E³ programme. For advice and further information, please contact your Student Exchange Coordinator.

When can I go and how do I apply?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Theoretically, it is possible to study in both the winter and summer semesters. As a rule, we send students in the winter semester, as the overlapping semester times of the participating universities often make the summer semester not possible.
The general exchange of students with Global E³ takes place on a reciprocal basis; i.e. students are exchanged one-to-one. The exchange also depends on the capacities of the member universities.
Step 1:
The Global E³ places will be announced together with the USA places ("HAW goes USA") in November. If not all places are awarded, the remaining places are announced again in May together with the Australia places ("HAW Down Under"). This happens very rarely.
The application deadlines are as follows:
- 6 January for study stays in winter semester of the same year
- 15 June for study stays in summer semester of the following year
The following documents need to be submitted in English to the responsible student exchange coordinator via the Mobility Online application portal:
- CV with photo
- Cover letter (max. 2 pages)
- List of courses you would like to take at the partner university (where relevant with information that the courses will transfer for credit from the department). You must take at least 4 subject courses (12 US credits). Please select 6-8 courses so that you have a choice of classes when you get to the US.
- Letter of recommendation from a professor (in German)
- Overview of grades from courses and examinations completed to date (myHAW, StISys)
- Language certificate* demonstrating sufficient skills in the language spoken in the country and/or the language of instruction. Please use the DAAD language certificate for this. It must be a recent certificate. You can find more information about obtaining your language certificate here.
* If you are selected, you will usually need to submit the results of a TOEFL test with your application to Global E3 in the region as proof of language proficiency.
Step 2:
The above mentioned dates are the internal application deadlines at HAW Hamburg. After you have received a confirmation from your Student Exchange Coordinator, you then apply online to Global E³.
NOTE: An acceptance by HAW Hamburg is not automatically an acceptance by Global E³ University. They can reject applicants due to capacity or or for other reasons.
Can I apply for more than one university?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Yes, in order to increase your chances, you can apply for up to three universities in the Global E3 Network. If you are selected by HAW Hamburg, there is no guarantee that you will get a place from the partner university. The Global E3 university may reject you for capacity or other reasons. Your application will then be forwarded to your second choice.
IMPORTANT: Please keep in mind that HAW Hamburg is part of the Global E³ network primarily in order to promote exchange with the USA. Applications for semester exchange in the USA are therefore preferred. In second place is Asia and particularly in countries with which we otherwise do not have a bilateral university cooperation.
Can I study abroad as a Master's student?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Master's students can spend a semester abroad at the following US partner universities: Clemson, Embry-Riddle, Mississippi State, Missouri UST, New Jersey IT, Texas Tech, University of Florida, University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign, University of Minnesota, University of Tulsa, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Other overseas Global E3 partners also offer the opportunity for Masters students.
Please note that you are competing for a place against students from other Global E3 partner universities, so the places are not guaranteed. Information on the universities.
How likely is it that I will get a place?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Global E3 places are open to students from all Global E3 universities. You are therefore in competition with them when it comes to getting a place and places are not guaranteed. Nevertheless, in the past our students have always got a place.
Can I study for more than one semester with Global E3?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Unfortunately, no. The places are in great demand and we want as many students as possible to have the chance to participate in this programme.
