Study in Vietnam: HaMoNee – Hamburg/Hanoi Mobile Engineers
As part of the HaMoNee – Hamburg/Hanoi Mobile Engineers project, we enable HAW Hamburg students to spend a tuition-free study semester abroad at one of our four partner universities in Vietnam. Selected students can also apply for a full scholarship (living expenses, travel costs, and a contribution to the student's insurance).
Because of the technical focus of the project partners, the programme is particularly intended for students and instructors in engineering degree courses; however, it is also open to participants from other subject areas.
You can find more information (in German only) about the application and selection process here. Information about the individual universities and answers to the most frequently asked questions are provided below.
The HaMoNee project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the HAW International funding programme, which supports the international competitiveness of applied sciences universities.

Frequently asked questions
Who can apply? What prerequisites do I need to fulfil?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Student status: HAW Hamburg Bachelor's who are in their fifth semester or higher (at the time of the exchange) and HAW Hamburg Master's students (limited possibilites, please refer to note below) can apply. Master's students should have completed at least one semester at HAW Hamburg before conducting their exchange semester.
Study achievements: You must be able to demonstrate good grades when you apply (and afterwards). You need to have an average grade of at least 2.5 to apply to the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST).
Language skills: You also need to have good enough English skills (at least level B1, but B2 is recommended) to follow a lesson in English (or Vietnamese). The language certificate must not be older than 2 years at the time of application.
Volunteer activity at the university – e.g. in the weBuddy programme or as an OE tutor – is also desirable.
You can download the information sheet (in German only) here.
You can also download the form used to demonstrate your language skills.
When can I go and how do I apply?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
A study abroad semester in Vietnam is possible in summer semester or winter semester. In Vietnam the semesters generally run from mid-January to mid-June and from mid-August to mid-January.
The exchanges with the partner universities are reciprocal. This means that student exchanges take place on a one-to-one basis. The number of spaces available and the departments that will be involved in the next round are decided at the beginning of May and December respectively.
The application deadline for a stay in winter semester 2023/24 or summer semester is 15 February 2023. The spaces will be announced on this page, on posters throughout the university and via email lists. The deadline for summer semester 2024 is 15 June (unfilled study places)
The information sheet about the application process lists the documents you need to submit and what is important for a successful application. We strongly recommend that you organise an advising session with the project organiser and your faculty's degree course coordinator.
Applications are submitted online via the Mobility Online application portal.
Can I apply to more than one university?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The level of demand is high, so you need to decide on one university and target your application to this university. However, you are welcome to list your second and third choices so that we know if you would consider another university should you not be selected for your first or second choice.
Does my department have to be listed as a partner for me to apply?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Yes, you can only apply to those universities where your department, faculty or degree course is listed. Please check yourself whether the partner university offers courses that would be suitable for you. Because of the technical focus of the project partners, the programme is particularly intended for students and instructors in engineering degree courses and in the Department of Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering.
I'm a Master's student. Can I also go to Vietnam?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The student exchanges are intended primarily for Bachelor's students, but the modules at HUST (integrated Bachelor-Master programmes) can also be attended by HAW Hamburg Master's students. Please discuss the suitability of the subjects and the possibility of receiving credit in advance with your student exchange coordinator and/or the contact person for your department/degree course.
Master's students in the Automotive Engineering degree course can complete their Master's thesis as part of the AUDEx project and in cooperation with the university or industry partners. Please contact the project head, Prof. Dr.-Ing Dirk Engel, and Svenja Henseleit to talk about what options are currently available: hamonee (at) haw-hamburg (dot) de
Students from other departments can also check whether an opportunity exists to complete their Master's thesis at a partner university. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis and needs to be discussed with the partner university. Please contact the project staff, Prof. Dr.-Ing Dirk Engel und Svenja Henseleit (hamonee (at) haw-hamburg (dot) de), as well as your faculty's degree course coordinator and examinations committee.
How good do my English or Vietnamese skills need to be?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Applicants need to have good English skills. As proof of your language skills for the internal application process, please use the DAAD language certificate. The certificate cannot be more than two years old at the time you apply and your score for each area should be at least ***. Native speakers or students who are bilingual do not need to submit the certificate (please submit a brief letter). However, they may need to submit a language certificate at a later date in order to register at the Vietnamese partner university.
Who can fill out the DAAD language certificate:
You can complete a short language test at the Hamburger Volkshochschule or the Hamburg School of English in Eppendorf. It costs €40 and can be completed at short notice. Tel.: 040 480 2116. The language school will fill out the DAAD language certificate.
Alternatively, the Allgemeinsprachen programme at Universität Hamburg offers the DAAD English test. The DAAD language certificate currently costs €60. You can find additional information and the test dates on the website.
If your internal application is successful, the DAAD language certificate will be accepted by several of the project partners.
Can I study in Vietnam for more than one semester?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Unfortunately not. Demand for the spaces is high, and we want to give as many students as possible the chance to participate in the programme.
Are funding opportunities or scholarships available?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Students who are selected for a semester abroad are automatically entitled to apply for a full scholarship (living expenses, travel costs and insurance contribution) as part of the HaMoNee Hamburg/Hanoi Mobile Engineers project.
Additional funding opportunities are available from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). You can find more information on the Scholarships and funding page. You can also obtain advice and information from the International Office – contact person: Marina Leß.
