Online application
You have decided on a degree course which can be studied with or without a cooperative degree component. The application processes for the two options are different.
International students usually opt not to pursue the cooperative degree option. However, if you wish to read about applying for the cooperative degree programme, please see the German-language version of this page for more information.
Steps to a successful application (non-cooperative degree)
Pay attention to the application deadline
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Check whether the degree course you want to apply to admits students for the winter or summer semester so that you don't miss the application deadline.
Check your higher education entrance qualification
................................................................................................................................................................................................
To begin a Bachelor's degree at HAW Hamburg you need to fulfil certain formal criteria.
Check the selection criteria
................................................................................................................................................................................................
For most degree courses, whether or not you receive a place in the particular course is determined by the final grade you received for your higher education entrance qualification or by your wait time. The exact limit (numerus clausus) on the number of applicants that can be admitted is only ascertained once the ranking list has been generated based on the information (grades and wait times) from the current applications. This means that for each degree course, the numerus clausus only becomes clear at the end of each admissions process.
Note: The criteria 'achievement' and 'wait time' are evaluated separately, which means that a longer wait time does not improve the average grade.

Additional criteria
In some cases the average grade is only one of several criteria. In certain degree courses, the grades for particular subjects are weighted differently and some are not taken into account in the calculation of points.
The following Bachelor's degree courses have different selection criteria. These are outlined in detail in the admissions regulations:
Mechanical Enginering – Energy and Plant Systems, Admissions policy (in German only)
Mechanical Engineering – Development and Design, Admissions policy (in German only)
Production Technology and Management, Admissions policy (in German only)
Complete the HAW navigator self-test
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Do the HAW navigator self-test (in German only) for the degree course you want to apply to. This test is an application requirement for most of the degree courses. Please note your application code when you are finished.
If you want to apply to the Business Information Systems degree course, you do not need to take a self-test. Please enter the application code 'XXXX' instead.
Register with Hochschulstart
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Register at hochschulstart.de. There you will be assigned a BID (applicant ID) and a BAN (applicant authentification number), both of which are required to submit an application.
We receive your contact information from Hochschulstart. In order to avoid problems in the subsequent process, please enter your phone number there using the following format: +4917612345678
Apply online to HAW Hamburg

Now you're almost finished! You just have to submit your application over our myHAW application and student portal. To do so, you first have to register. You will then receive an email with your preliminary access information and how to activate your account. Please only register once. Sometimes it takes a few minutes before you receive the activation email. Make sure to also look in your spam folder if necessary.
For the subsequent application process via myHAW it is helpful to have all the necessary documents directly at hand – for example, so that you can list your grades or particular time periods. Have your transcript, information about civilian service or a voluntary year of social service and, for example, documents about vocational training ready. You will also need your application documents as PDF files in order to upload these for the online application. Please use a PDF programme (e.g. Adobe Acrobat) to do this.
Please also have the following ready:
- The application code from the HAW navigator self-test
- Your BID and BAN from Hochschulstart
- Where necessary, additional documents such as language certificates, if these are required for your degree course (see the information on the specific course)
- For international applicants: You also need a so-called VPD (preliminary review documentation) from uni assist. This organisation checks foreign higher education entrance qualifications. Graduates of the Studienkolleg (preparatory courses for university) do not have to have their documents checked by uni assist, but they submit a copy of the transcript from the Feststellungsprüfung (university qualification exam) AND a certificate with the converted grade from their foreign educational certificates before the application deadline. Non-EU applicants also submit a CV, a statement about why they are applying, and other documents and certificates to the selection committee because there is an allocated number of places for them – unlike the case for EU applicants.
Rank your Hochschulstart applications in order of preference
................................................................................................................................................................................................
If you have applied for more than one degree course via Hochschulstart, please rank them in order of preference. You should do this carefully, because in the coordination phase you will be given an offer of admission for the highest possible option. This means that you won't receive an offer for those applications lower on the list. So if you really want to study with us, please be sure to give your application to HAW Hamburg the best ranking. If you can, please also read the information about ranking your applications (in German only) on the Hochschulstart page.

Apply to a company
................................................................................................................................................................................................
If you decide to study in a cooperative degree programme, you first need to apply to a company of your choice for admission to the cooperative programme.
To the company portal for cooperative degree programmes
If your application is successful, the company will sign a study and internship contract with you. This contract is a prerequisite for the subsequent application process at HAW Hamburg.
Prospective students need to apply to the company of their choice approximately one year before the start of the degree course. The application deadlines are also listed on the company portal. Before signing a study and internship contract, international applicants must determine together with the company whether they are legally entitled to complete a cooperative degree programme under German labour law.

Things to note if your internship semester is moved up to the start of your studies!
................................................................................................................................................................................................
If you are planning to work during the initial half-year of your degree and will first attend courses at the university in the subsequent semester, please note the following:
You also need to apply now to the university for a study place. You will already be a HAW Hamburg student at the beginning of your internship semester and can use the semester ticket for the public transport system in the greater Hamburg area. Accordingly, you will also need to pay the semester contribution for this internship semester.
When you are asked to confirm that you accept the offer of a study place, please also indicate that you will begin your cooperative degree studies with an internship semester.
