Online application
You have decided on a degree course that does not require you to register for the so-called dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV). However, some degree courses do require completion of an artistic aptitude test or the HAW Navigator self-test before you can register at HAW Hamburg. For the English-language Bachelor's degree course in Information Engineering you need to apply via the myHAW application portal and fulfil the criteria for international applicants.
Steps to a successful application
Pay attention to the application deadline
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Check whether the degree course you want to apply to admits students for the winter or summer semester so that you don't miss the application deadline.
Please note: Due to the corona pandemic, different deadlines apply for winter semester 2021/22. Please be sure to check the page of your specific degree course. You can find all of the information about current changes to the application process here.
Check your higher education entrance qualification

To begin a Bachelor's degree at HAW Hamburg, you need to fulfil certain formal criteria.
If required, complete the HAW navigator self-test
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Do the HAW navigator self-test (in German only) for the degree course you want to apply to. This test is an application requirement for the European Computer Science and Interdisciplinary Healthcare and Management degree courses. Please note your application code when you are finished.
If required, complete the artistic aptitude test
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Applicants to the Illustration, Communication Design, and Fashion, Costume and Textile Design degree courses must complete an artistic aptitude test in October or November before applying online for the following summer semester.

Now you're almost finished! You just have to submit your application over our myHAW application and student portal. To do so, you first have to register. You will then receive an email with your preliminary access information and how to activate your account. Please only register once. Sometimes it takes a few minutes before you receive the activation email. Make sure to also look in your spam folder if necessary.
For the subsequent application process via myHAW it is helpful to have all the necessary documents available – for example, so that you can list your grades or particular time periods. Have your transcript, information about civilian service or a voluntary year of social service and, for example, documents about vocational training ready. You will also need a PDF programme (e.g. Adobe Acrobat) and a printer in order to also mail the application documents to the university.
Please also have the following ready:
- The application code from the HAW navigator self-test
- Your BID and BAN from Hochschulstart
- Where necessary, additional documents such as language certificates, if these are required for your degree course (see the information on the specific course)
- For international applicants: You also need a so-called VPD (preliminary review documentation) from uni assist. This organisation checks foreign higher education entrance qualifications. Graduates of the Studienkolleg (preparatory courses for university) do not have to have their documents checked by uni assist, but they submit a copy of the transcript from the Feststellungsprüfung (university qualification exam) AND a certificate with the converted grade from their foreign educational certificates before the application deadline. Non-EU applicants also submit a CV, a statement about why they are applying, and other documents and certificates to the selection committee because there is an allocated number of places for them – unlike the case for EU applicants.
