Publication fund
HAW Hamburg has successfully applied to the German Research Foundation (DFG) for funding of Open Access journal articles. Through the programme "Open Access Publication Funding", the DFG will support the publication of Open Access articles at HAW Hamburg with a grant of 700 euros per publication over the next three years (2024-2026). Applications for this grant are open to all university members. We encourage everyone to publish Open Access in order to promote the dissemination of research results.
The previous funding level of the publication fund (financing of APC up to 2,000 gross - from 1.1.2024 including the DFG funding share) will only apply until the remaining funds from previous years have been used up.

Funding criteria
- Your article needs to be published in a purely open access journal which adheres to recognised quality standards, e.g. peer review, and which makes full-text versions of its articles available to users online directly upon publication and at no cost (gold open access). Articles that are published individually as open access texts in closed access journals (hybrid open access) are not eligible for funding.Additional information on finding established open access journals
- In principle, a maximum of 700 euros gross per publication is funded by the DFG. In addition, articles can be funded per author from residual funds from previous years up to a total amount including DFG funding of 2,000 euros gross.
- It must be permissable to make the publisher version of each article funded available at no charge directly upon publication (without an embargo period) via REPOSIT, HAW Hamburg's institutional repository.
- You are required to be a HAW Hamburg member and the corresponding or submitting author of the article.
- The article must be published with a Creative Commons licence (CC licence, or ideally CC-BY). The publisher should not require an additional fee for CC licensing.
- The publication information and the amount of funding support provided will be published on OpenAPC.
- Please review in advance whether the publication fee can be covered with institutional or external funds. Double funding through DFG funds is excluded.
- If the publication is the result of a DFG project, reference must be made to the DFG research funding (third-party funding) in the funding acknowledgements. You can find more information here.
- Where funding is granted through the publication fund, this must be indicated in the funding acknowledgements section. Sample statements include the following:

Application process
Applications to have the article processing charges covered can be submitted once the article has been accepted for publication in an open access journal. Please use this form to submit your application. Our application form works despite the cyber attack, your application will be automatically forwarded to the HAW address (see above).
