Emergency financial assistance
HAW Hamburg students who are experiencing a financial emergency through no fault of their own can turn to one of the Hamburg emergency funds.

Students who find themselves in an unexpected, acute and temporary financial emergency can apply to Studierendenwerk Hamburg's emergency fund for an emergency loan or subsidised and/or free meals in the Studierendenwerk cafeterias.
An in-person meeting and proof of a financial emergency are required before an application can be submitted. Applicants have no legal entitlement to assistance.

If you are financially unable to pay the semester contribution, you may contact the Students' Union (AStA). In warranted cases it can provide you with a loan.

VDFAS – Verein der Förderer Ausländischer Studierender (Association of Sponsors of Foreign Students)

The Association of Sponsors of Foreign Students (VDFAS) was founded by instructors, employees and friends of HAW Hamburg to provide fast and uncomplicated assistance to international students at the university who find themselves in a financial emergency through no fault of their own.
If you are experiencing a financial emergency and want to apply for assistance, you need to submit the following documents:
- the application (available at the International Office)
- your CV
- a detailed explanation of why your situation is a financial emergency
- a printout of your myHAW account showing your transcript
- copies of your last three bank statements
- your HAW Hamburg enrolment certificate
Students are also required to come to an in-person meeting at the HAW Hamburg International Office. Financial assistance of up to €400 can be made available. Students can apply for emergency financial support from the VDFAS a maximum of three times during their studies. They are not automatically entitled to receive this funding.

Diakonisches Werk

The Diakonisches Werk, a charitable organisation that is part of the Protestant Church, supports students at Hamburg universities who are from developing and emerging countries and are experiencing a financial emergency. It does not matter what religion they belong to.
If you want to apply, you need to submit the following documents and come to an in-person meeting at the Diakonisches Werk:
- a written application with your name, address, signature, the date and place, and a detailed explanation of why you are applying
- your CV
- the filled-out form with your personal information (available at the Diakonisches Werk and the International Office)
- a copy of your residency permit
- complete bank statements from all of your accounts for the previous three months (listing the 1 to 31 of each month) or a statement covering the previous 90 days
- your enrolment certificate
- your personal course plan for the planned duration of your studies
- in the case of illness: a doctor's certicate
- in the case of a repeat application: proof of your personal involvement and performance in efforts or work related to development policy
- an assessment of how much of your studies you have completed (this necessitates an appointment at the International Office or your department's advising office)
