Our department
The Department of Public Management is one of the four faculties that make up the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences.
The Department of Public Management has offered the six-semester cooperative degree programme in Public Management since winter semester 2006/07, while the part-time Public Management Master's degree course for professionals has been offered since 2009. Training is provided in close cooperation with our cooperative education partners, the Landesbetrieb ZAF/AMD and the Human Resources Agency of the City of Hamburg's Senate.
The cooperative Public Management degree programme teaches academic knowledge and methods which are subsequently applied in concrete professional practice during the practical phase of the programme. Graduates are qualified for a mid-level administrative position within Hamburg's civil service.
Graduates of the continuing professional education Master's degree course in Public Management are eligible for promotion to upper-level positions within Hamburg's civil service. After successful completion of this course, you will have the skills to take on management positions or independent research work in organisations, universities or social work facilities.
Focus of the Bachelor's degree course
The Bachelor's degree course has both a legal and an economic focus. Students are primarily prepared for a future position within the City of Hamburg's ministries and agencies. They are granted the status of probationary civil servants by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg for the duration of their studies.
Cooperative degree programme as part of the Bachelor's degree course
The HAW Hamburg Department of Public Management and the Landesbetrieb ZAF/AMD jointly administer the degree course. The Department of Public Management is responsible for the theoretical study in semesters one, two, four and five. The Landesbetrieb ZAF/AMD is responsible for the practical training segments in semesters three and six. As part of their joint cooperation agreement, the two partners cooperate closely to offer a cohesive and high-quality degree course.
At least nine of the twelve months of practical training are completed within the City of Hamburg's ministries and agencies. The remaining three months of practical training can be carried out at a private sector company or abroad.
