Information Engineering
Today's complex information processing systems require specialists with comprehensive know-how regarding the software, hardware and information technology aspects of such systems.
The international Bachelor's degree course (B.Sc.) in Information Engineering, which is taught completely in English, enables you to understand, specify, design and maintain such systems and to further specialise in the disciplines involved.

Complex systems that process various kinds of information can be found in many business and industrial sectors. In automotive systems, electronic control units process sensor output to determine the car's current stability and derive counter-measures in critical situations. User interfaces with touch panels read user inputs and control machines in the automation industry. Autonomous vehicles in automated warehouses make use of various sensor signals to find the right shelf. Smart cameras check the quality of parts and goods post-production, and wireless communication systems allow mobile devices to deliver location-based services.
All these fields need people who have the engineering know-how to design the information processing components of such systems – as software architects or designers, electronics engineers, system engineers or test and quality engineers. As an Information Engineering graduate, you could also work in (technical) marketing as a link between German companies and the markets, suppliers and business partners worldwide.
Your ability to put theoretical and state-of-the art knowledge into practice will make you very attractive to employers. Equipped with project experience gained from the first semester on, project management and business skills, and experience from a mandatory industrial placement, you will be well prepared to take on responsibility in a company.
Course content and structure

The degree course, which has been accredited by ASIIN, is seven semesters in length, with a large part of the curriculum dedicated to practical experience in the form of lab work, student projects and a semester in industry.
Curriculum (structure):
- Year 1: fundametals of mathematics, electrical engineering and software construction, intercultural and language competencies
- Year 2: signals and systems, analog and digital electronics and applications, computer science and applications, economics and management
- Semester 5: industrial placement (20 weeks)
- Semesters 6/7: selected topics in computer science, computer engineering and information engineering, elective modules, Bachelor thesis

This degree course will suit you if you have a broad general interest in technology and technical systems, enjoy solving problems from mathematics and physics, and like the idea of programming and creating software solutions and understanding and advancing the electronic aspects of today’s technology. You’ll do well if you have the passion and staying power to tackle and solve complex tasks and are a rational and independent thinker.

Admission requirements

- Higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulreife) equivalent to German Fachhochschulreife, allgemeine Hochschulreife (Abitur) or fachgebundene Hochschulreife or equivalent
- English language proficiency as demonstrated by one of the following: TOEFL (at least 550 PBT or 220 CBT, 87 IBT), IELTS (min. Band 6), BULATS (65), TELC B2-C1, Pearson (PTE General level 3, PTE Academic 59)
Alternatively, a higher education entrance qualification equivalent to an Allgemeine Hochschulreife or Fachhochschulreife from a majority English-speaking country will be accepted as proof of English language proficiency. For applicants holding a German higher education entrance qualification, a grade of at least befriedigend in English shall be deemed proof of English language proficiency.
If you completed your schooling outside Germany and want to study here for a Bachelor’s degree, you need to hold an academic school-leaving qualification which entitles you to admission to higher education; that is, it needs to be comparable to a German Abitur or Fachhochschulreife. The organisation uni assist will check your certificates from school and any degree-level studies to establish comparability.

Orientation unit

An orientation unit will take place at the beginning of your studies. In this unit, you will receive all of the information that is important as you start your degree course, the semester groups will be assigned, and you will be registered for the computer network. Preparatory mathematics course

Strong math skills are critical to successful studies in Information and Electrical Engineering. For this reason, the Department of Information and Electrical Engineering offers new students the opportunity to test and refresh their knowledge in a preparatory course that runs during the 14 days before they begin their actual studies. Registering your Bachelor's thesis
................................................................................................................................................................................................
If you want to register your thesis, the registration form must first be filled out and printed using the Student Information System (Stisys), then signed by the first supervisor and you. You then need to submit the form to the Faculty Service Office. The date on which you submit the form will be recorded as the thesis registration date.

If you have a health impairment, you may be able to apply for compensation for disadvantages (Nachteilsausgleich) in examinations. You can obtain more information from the representative for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
Regulations for exams missed due to illness

In the event of illness, you must submit a sick note from your doctor (Krankmeldung) to the Faculty Service Office immediately – i.e. within the three days following the examination. If a sick note is not received by the Faculty Service Office in time, you will be required to submit a medical certificate (ärztliches Attest). To ensure that a conclusive and specific certificate is submitted, the Examinations Committee will provide you with a form to give to your doctor (see above under 'Examination-related forms'). Please ensure that the certificate is filled out correctly, and especially that it contains the practice stamp and the doctor's signature.
In general, the decision about whether an illness is a valid justification for not attending an examination will be made by the Examinations Committee.
In the event that an examination must be interrupted due to illness, special conditions apply. More information can be obtained from the Examinations Committee.
In the case of a supplementary oral examination, an oral examination, or a colloquium, the examiner must be informed that the examination cannot take place due to illness.

Re-registration

To re-register for the new semester, please pay the semester contribution by bank transfer within the re-registration period. Please do not pay before the start of the re-registration period as the final amount will not be determined before this period begins.
The semester contribution for summer semester 2024 is €331.
Please also transfer the amount even if you are blocked from re-registering. The block can only be lifted if you have paid the semester contribution.
New re-registration deadlines as of summer semester 2024
Winter semester: 1 July –15 September
Summer semester: 1 January –15 March
The semester contribution must be in the HAW Hamburg account by the last day of the re-registration period at the latest!
Important: Late re-registration can result in involuntary deregistration from the university. Subsequent re-registration is only possible within the appeals period. Regardless of whether or not deregistration takes place, an additional administrative fee of €15 will be charged for late re-registration.
If you are financially unable to pay the semester contribution, you may contact the Students' Union (AStA). In warranted cases it can provide you with a loan.
